UptimeRobot is a bit of a veteran having been launched at the beginning of this decade. However, the sheer breadth and depth of Site24x7’s offerings runs the danger of confusing novice users who only want to check their sites for availability. The website monitoring service also provides far more free tools than its competitors. Site24x7 distinguishes between basic monitors and advanced monitors: web page speed and website defacement for example count as advanced monitors, while a pure HTTP request is deemed basic. The cheapest tier gives you the ability to monitor 10 websites or servers with one synthetic web transaction with the (rare) ability to buy more add-ons if needed – that might come in handy as the lowest RUM (real user monitoring) pageview count stands at only 100K.Īll tiers have a 30-day free trial period. That’s great for DevOps teams who want to monitor and troubleshoot applications, servers and network infrastructure, including private and public clouds. In its simplest form, Site24x7 is a powerful website monitoring solution that scales all the way to become an all-encompassing, full-blown powerhouse that can do application performance monitoring and infrastructure monitoring for thousands of servers and websites simultaneously. You can also use its website speed test to test the load time of a page (or an index page) and analyze it to find bottlenecks. Pricing is quite expensive, though, all Pingdom tiers come with a free 14-day trial. Note that Pingdom sits alongside other Solarwinds products (AppOptics, PaperTrail and Loggly) to provide a one-stop-shop for businesses looking to monitor almost everything that is connected. It has multiple alerting policies, like high and low importance, which alert individuals at different levels of an organization. Pingdom offers website availability monitoring, transaction monitoring, and real user monitoring, among other things. It focuses on website performance and availability monitoring, meaning it looks at whether the website is up, and whether it loads as expected. Pingdom is regarded by many as the leader of the website monitoring market, with customers worldwide including the likes of Walmart, Salesforce and Spotify. Maintenance windows not available on cheaper plans While Alertra is good for general spot checks, a subscription is worth considering as it's a very cost-effective service. There's also no contract, so you can start/stop the service whenever you feel like. This can be especially important when other services might see that your server is still up and running through a HTTPS request, but not notice that MySQL has crashed, for example, which can be especially important when most websites are database driven. In general, though, Alertra is a simple but useful monitoring solution to ensure basic your website functions are up and running, such as HTTP, SMTP, POP3, DNS, and MySQL. This means if you try - and fail - to access your website, you can use Alertra to quickly diagnose whether the website server really is offline, or whether it's a potential network/connection issue with your broadband. When it comes to website monitoring, probably your first stop should be Alertra, especially because it allows you to do a free spot check of access to your website from server locations around the world. In Moscow it was already 9 May, which became the Soviet Union’s “Victory Day” in what Russians call the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45. on, marked as “Victory in Europe Day” by France, Britain and the United States. Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender came into force at 11:01 p.m. They deny Putin’s claim that the expansion of the NATO alliance to Russia’s borders poses a threat to its security or justifies Moscow’s invasion.Īs many as 354,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or injured in the Ukraine war, which is now in its 15th month and could well grind on well beyond 2023, according to a trove of purported US intelligence documents posted online. Kyiv and its allies accuse Putin of waging an unprovoked war of aggression in Ukraine to seize land. The Soviet Union lost 27 million people in World War Two, including many millions in Ukraine, but eventually pushed Nazi forces back to Berlin, where Hitler committed suicide and the red Soviet Victory Banner was raised over the Reichstag in 1945. A single tank took part – a T-34, a type used in World War Two. Putin cheered for “Russia, for our valiant Armed Forces, for victory!”Ĭheers rang out across Red Square, with a gun salute and the Russian national anthem, though with a much curtailed show of military hardware – and no aviation. Everyone is ready to help, praying for you,” he said of those taking part in what the Kremlin calls a “special military operation”. “The whole country rallied to support our heroes. Putin hailed Russian forces in Ukraine as heroes who were fighting for the country’s future against a West which, he said, had forgotten the decisive role played by the Soviet Union in defeating Nazi Germany. The West’s goal, Putin said, “is to achieve the collapse and destruction of our country, cross out the results of the Second World War, finally break the system of global security and international law, and strangle any sovereign centers of development”. In Putin’s words, “in a number of countries, memorials to Soviet soldiers are ruthlessly and cold-bloodedly destroyed”, thus “a real cult of the Nazis and their accomplices” being created. “They seem to have forgotten what the insane claims of the Nazis for world domination led to”, he went further. “We believe that any ideology of superiority is inherently disgusting, criminal and deadly”, Putin said according to the Kremlin transcript, adding that “Western globalist elites still talk about their exclusivity”, provoking “bloody conflicts, hatred, Russophobia”, “destroying family, traditional values that make a person a person”. “A real war has again been unleashed against our homeland,” he said. “The decisive battles for the fate of our Motherland have always become patriotic, all-national and sacred,” the 70-year-old president told veterans and soldiers assembled on Red Square for the annual Victory Day parade. Putin has repeatedly likened the war in Ukraine – which he casts as a defensive move against a West which wants to carve up Russia – to the challenge Moscow faced when Adolf Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in 1941. In a lackluster Victory Day speech on Tuesday (9 May), President Vladimir Putin blamed the West for what he said was an “ideology of superiority” which he compared to the Nazi claims for world domination. Sea kayaks come in several different styles, materials and configurations. Wooden kayaks and fabric kayaks on wooden frames (such as the folding kayak Klepper) were dominating the market up until 1950s, when fiberglass boats were introduced, while modern plastic kayaks first appeared in 1984. Archaeologists have found evidence indicating that kayaks are at least 4000 years old. The ancient Aleut name for a sea kayak is Iqyak, and earliest models were constructed from a light wooden frame (tied together with sinew or baleen) and covered with sea mammal, (sea lion or seal) hides. Inuit hunters developed a fast seagoing craft to hunt seals and walrus. Understand Inuit seal hunter in a kayak, armed with a harpoon.Ĭontemporary sea kayaks trace their origin to the native boats of Alaska, northern Canada, and Southwest Greenland. Kayaks are also popular to bring along when cruising on small craft, allowing boaters to go ashore or generally give access to areas that larger boats won't fit. It is often combined with wilderness backpacking for exploring otherwise difficult to access wilderness areas and allows access to fishing areas that might otherwise be inaccessible. Sea kayaking is open to people of all skill levels, from renting a kayak to paddle around a small lake, to months long journeys into complex marine conditions. Canoes are an alternative for many of the areas accessible by sea kayak, but less suitable for unsheltered waters. Although sea kayaks come in variety of styles, they generally are different then their white water cousins in that they trade off the maneuverability for higher cruising speed, cargo capacity, ease of straight-line paddling and comfort for long journeys. Sea kayaking is popular around the world anywhere there are large open bodies of water to be explored: lakes, bays, calm rivers, estuaries or the ocean. The Oregon Coast Aquarium has a lot to do with this overwhelming change of heart. Like others, I first saw the teeth, the angry-looking face, the evil sidekick reputation (thanks a bunch Disney). While I have never been scared of them, I have always been cautious. Some as shallow as 40 feet, but more often in the 100 to 120 feet range tucked into rocky dens in the Hood Canal. Since 2016 I have seen many more wolf eels. How on earth does one reconcile these differences? On the one hand we are capable of eating animals, totally detaching ourselves from their experience, life and character and then on the other, of loving and appreciating them, crying when they die, and yes even reading personalities into their actions. It was at this point that I realized how peculiar people are. When we surfaced, my instructor-a tall, “manly man” known for his crabbing prowess and love of a good old tri-tip steak-talked affectionately about this creature, as though he were talking about his dog. It didn’t appear scared, but it also didn’t act aggressively. It was as though it was just as interested in checking us out as we were it. It peered at each of us but didn’t venture out too much further. There, like a frond of seaweed, a thick grey wolf eel was wafting, its fat upper torso tapering into a slim ribbon shape that it kept tucked inside the tire. He stopped suddenly and gestured toward an old car tire. My instructor was leading the way back up the slope after our deep dive for the Advanced class. The first time I saw a wolf eel was in 2016 at about 60 feet in the Hood Canal in Washington State. While the daring diver will tell you “if you’re careful you can give ‘em a scratch under the chin,” most people will pull back in distaste, the wolf eel’s wrinkly face, and needle-sharp teeth the sole focus of their gaze.īut, spend enough time diving with these creatures and even the most hard-hearted soul will find themselves softening. Unfortunately, wolf eels-much like sharks-have an undeservedly poor reputation. Today their grumpy faces have a way of making me smile, even with a regulator in my mouth. Firstly by reputation, secondly by observation, and more recently as a result of hand-feeding them squid in the Oregon Coast Aquarium. In the couple of years I have spent obsessively scuba diving, I have come to know the wolf eel in many different ways. If sea lions are the dogs of the sea then the wolf eel is the cat of the sea. |
